What changed for 2026 in German payroll

Three 2026 shifts move the number in your bank account.

  • Grundfreibetrag rose to €12,348 (up from €12,096 in 2025). That’s the basic tax-free allowance, the first €12,348 of your annual income is taxed at 0%. For a typical single Class I earner, this alone means around €50–€150 more take-home per year without doing anything.
  • Social-security ceilings jumped. The pension and unemployment ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze) is now €101,400/year (€8,450/month) up from €96,600. The health and long-term care ceiling is €69,750/year (€5,812.50/month) up from €66,150. If you earn above these ceilings, a bigger slice of your salary is now subject to social-security deductions, so high earners actually take home slightly less than in 2025 despite the tax cut.
  • Average GKV Zusatzbeitrag settled at 2.9%. This is the top-up rate your statutory health insurer charges on top of the 14.6% base. Individual funds vary, TK charges 2.69%, DAK 3.20%, AOK varies by state so switching insurer can save you €200–€400 a year at typical salaries. The calculator’s default is 2.9%; edit it to match your fund’s actual rate.

Threshold you should also know: the compulsory GKV insurance limit (Versicherungspflichtgrenze) is €77,400/year in 2026. Earn above it and you become eligible to switch from public (GKV) to private health insurance (PKV). It’s a big, mostly-irreversible decision; the calculator supports both so you can see the net-pay side of the comparison.

Compare your Germany net salary with your monthly living costs

Your net take-home only tells you half the story, the other half is what one realistic month costs where you live. Rent in Munich or Frankfurt eats 30–40% of a typical Class I net, in Leipzig or Dresden it’s closer to 20%. Run your city through our Germany Cost of Living Calculator and put the two numbers side by side before you sign any contract.
